“Hello (Name)” - Nothing like the personal touch i “Hello (Name)” - Nothing like the personal touch in an AI writers scam email to reel us in. Anyone else heard from Hamilton Jasmine? Still got their writers scam L-plates on maybe…
We returned home on Monday night blissed out after We returned home on Monday night blissed out after a peaceful week of walking and driving some spectacular parts of Tassie’s East Coast including Tasman Peninsular where we did the ‘moderately difficult’ walk to Cape Hauy then the ‘slightly easier’ Wineglass Bay Walk on Freycinet Peninsular, and smaller walks every day. At Hobart airport Monday arvo as our delayed flight home turns into Monday night, with our phones and bodies running on empty, we fell in with an older couple from California who were extolling the virtues of Australia’s beauty spots and our democracy. ‘You have such sane leadership here.’ ‘We do now.’ ‘And you don’t have ICE here, those gestapo thugs – thank God!’ ‘No, nothing like that here.’ ‘And you have free speech, you don’t have to be afraid to speak your mind...You guys are so lucky!’ ‘And we voted them in,’ I smugly say. Then next morning… we see the videos of the Sydney Town Hall protest. Amongst them my friend James Ricketson, 76, being beaten up by five or six cops for peacefully protesting the visiting genocidal war criminal who got the red-carpet treatment, while those who want him sent to the ICC are pepper-sprayed, bashed and dragged off to gaol. (James’s pics, not mine). So Chris Minns, what’s with the ICE-style police thuggery? “You have to look at the context of the pictures…” In the context of social cohesion maybe? Wtf, 😬 Albo? Why all the denials? Very concerning.
Have you been good… ??? Yes Big Santa, I swear… M Have you been good… ???
Yes Big Santa, I swear…

Merry Christmas one and all.

At the launch of Michael Brissenden’s new rural cr At the launch of Michael Brissenden’s new rural crime thriller, Dust, yesterday at Harry Hartog Mosman. Great to see @m_brisso in conversation with his fellow #1 ranking Australian author @michaelrobotham – a lively conversation in front of a lively crowd of readers, writers and agents down the back of the bookshop, that covered bodies in drying lakes, renewable energy, small town politics, sovereign citizens, conspiracy rabbit holes and found its way back to the dreaded subject of AI, that is impacting most of us writing and reading peeps one way or another. I can’t wait to read Dust. People rave about the complex plotting and heart-stopping ending of what might be Brisso’s best yet. Always great to see writer friends @kata_the_writer @michaelrobotham @m_brisso and re-meet Brisso’s agent Daniel Pilkington @danreadsabit and have an inspiring chat with acclaimed author, bookseller, blogster John Purcell @bookeboy

Rainy day, read away…feels like it’s been raining Rainy day, read away…feels like it’s been raining forever. But it’s ok, thanks to the joy of reading. Escaping into another world, another great adventure, (and feeding my reading habit) sure beats getting cabin fever. I’ve been rainy day reading for most of the last ten weeks. Twelve books and four audiobooks. Yeah, I know, I should get out more…
Favourite Australian crime fiction, Jane Caro’s ‘Lyrebird’
Favourite international historical fiction, Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s ‘The Angel’s Game’
Favourite literary spy novel (and all-round favourite), William Boyd’s ‘Gabriel’s Moon’.
Longest book, but not his best, Stephen King’s ‘Nightmares and Dreamscapes’.
Shortest book with the most to say, Sara Haddad’s ‘The Sunbird’.
Favourite audiobook read by the author, William Boyd’s ‘The Dreams of Bethany Mellmoth’.

I’m writing on Cammeraygal land, on Sydney’s North Shore land which was never ceded, and I pay respect to elders past, present and emerging.
