Louise Bourgeois, sculptor, painter, seamstress, sketcher, poet, diarist, writer and storyteller in many media in every day of a long life. Everyone has seen her giant spider ‘Maman’, and other big spiders but there are hundreds of smaller amazing works that plumb the depths of love and hate and creativity and motherhood in this Art Gallery of NSW exhibition of a long life in art, which I saw yesterday. “I’ve gone to hell and back. And it was wonderful.” LB, at age 89. Loved it.

In Brisbane last weekend for gathering of the Woodland and Lusins clans and others to celebrate my brother’s mother-in-law Elvira Lusins’ 100th bday. Her secret to long life and mental clarity? Three games of sudoku a day - the hard ones - some gin rummy (or is that gin and rummy…) each night, and a lot of offspring around her. That and a feeling of gratitude for her great luck. A special lady whose medical degree in Riga was interrupted by the war - WW2.

A strange, mysterious book of non-fiction crime st

A strange, mysterious book of non-fiction crime stories, some notorious cases, many petty and vicious incidents, most forgotten except by victims and their families, comprised of essays written in Doyle’s unique hard-boiled Aussie noir style, scattered with stark black and white crime scene photos of Sydney suburban houses and streets. These pics reduce the city I recall from the late 60’s and 70’s to (as he puts it) “a purgatorial drabness” and a surreal flatness, each with its own seedy or tragic tale of woe. Peter Doyle’s poetic prose elevates the spare reports of his top cop uncle Brian Doyle and other police of the day to deeply human portraits of desire and longing for a way out of a place and time so far removed from our own but with echoes you can still hear and shadows you can glimpse.
